Stagecoach robberies were a common occurrence in the Wild West, disrupting travel and commerce. The desolate landscapes provided ample opportunities for outlaws to ambush unsuspecting travelers. Protecting valuable cargo and passengers was a constant challenge for stagecoach companies. News of a robbery would spread quickly through towns, creating fear and uncertainty. The pursuit of the robbers often led to dramatic chases and confrontations.
October 8, 1881, the “Sandy Bob” stage line between Tombstone and Bisbee was robbed

near Contention City. Frank Stilwell and Pete Spence, Cowboys associates, were suspected of the robbery. This escalated the tension between the Cowboys and Earp’s.
